20 March: One month since the light went out

We were amazed to realise that today is exactly one month since our disaster. The whole period is just a nightmare blur, but words can never express our gratitude for the fantastic support we've had from family, friends, friends of friends and indeed total strangers.

We have to be grateful that Mike is still with us and, looking back, he's made real progress. He's now chugging along in the medical ward. The nurses are superb and his chest infection is still improving. Each day he gets a little bit more responsive. He's now trying to remove the various tubes into him, is a good sign of soem awareness. He's also lifting his torso slightly and turning his head a bit more. His face is showing a bit more expression and his grandmother got a proper laugh out of him, using humour at his Uncle Stuart's expense. Those of you who know both Mike's Gran and his Uncle will understand her success!

While it's easier for us having Mike close to home, we're missing all you Aucklanders. Don't think we've forgotten you. We're reading Mike Lance Armstrong's second book and he seems to be following quite big chunks of it. There's definitely a cyclist still there inside that injured brain of his.

Hugs to everyone

Lee

Good to hear that Mike is showing positive signs of responsiveness.

We also find the "BLOG" a wonderful device. It enables us all to keep in touch without the worry of calling at the wrong time.

We will continue with both thoughts and prayers for you all.

Didn't get to read this last night because feel asleep in the HK7 finals - can you believe it!
Yes I can believe it is a month - in some ways it feels even longer but I am contually amazed by your great strength. Please know you are constantly in our thoughts. Big hugs from us all including Mum. Ali has written Mike a letter - mostly about his car and even enclosed photos of the new engine and a spotless engine bay!!Knowing dear Mike, he will still show polite interest! J home from Fiji tomorrow.

Hi Guys,

its a shame you had to move down to Wellington, the weather here has been getting better and I believe Wellington isn't putting on it's greatest weather.

Good to here the progress is coming along. We are always thinking of Mike and love hearing about his constant improvement.

Looking forward to seeing you in July for the Marathon.

There's also a sense of humour in there too, and a brief sparkle in his eyes that you Aucklanders have nurtured. We will always be grateful to you for your support at the worst time. Blessings on you all! Mike's Gran.

Mike,
I only found out about your accident on Friday. It sounds like you're getting better and will be back on your bike in no time. I'll be back in town in a couple of weeks and would love to pop in for a visit. All the best,
Glen Lowis and family

Hi to you all!

I got a shock to hear that Mike is back in hospital but pleased that things are coming right in terms of the chest infection.

I have four days off so will give you a call in the evening.

Hope the poster arrived for Mikes new room.

Much love,
