21 March:Tracking upwards

A good morning today. Mike was the most alert he has been and for the longest time. He seemed to listen to my conversation and even managed the occasional nod. I asked him if he understood about the accident and he nodded. I checked up on his people memory occasionally and he at least blinked 'yes' in the right places. A chest specialist came by and cracked a joke and Mike grinned. (Very sensible to laugh at the specialist's jokes!) Uncle Stuart turned up and Mike continued to respond to family stories etc. He's also moving more each day and it will soon be a real challenge to keep Mike in the bed and all the tubes in him.

I started doing the face stimulation massage that you showed me,Kim - just working from memory - and he seemed to like it. Tonight Bryce brought home the notes so I will get it more consistent with those.

By the afternoon though he was worn out and was either asleep or fairly vacant. The fatigue he will experience will take us all a long time to get used to. He will be in the medical ward for several days yet, so we can't really get into a routine for visitors but I guess that will all sort itself out gradually.

It was great to see Lee today in the queue at the hospital coffee shop. I was walking along thinking I should tell you about it, in case you hadn't found it already, and there you were.
Lee, I'll send you a text message with my work phone number. My time at work is pretty flexible, so please give me a call when you feel like catching up, sharing some experiences, walking round the block, whatever.
Our thoughts are with you all,
Mary Rowse

Fabulous to hear that Mike has started to respond. Also great that you are in own familar surroundings in Wellington.
All the Gerrards of Queensland think of him daily and send positive vibes. Though his progress will be slow, each tiny improvement step is a step in the right direstion for a full recovery [as nurse friends tell us!]
Hugs to you Lee and Bryce. You are certainly wonderful parents.

Hi Wilkinsons
Well done to mike on his progress. He always did get excited about visiting Wellington, so maybe this will give him a bit of encouragement.
Thought about Mike a lot around the Tour of Northland, so thanks Mike for the inspiration, definitely helped. (Was riding with MIke's good friend Paul too, so network of Mike's friends is definitely everywhere!)
Keep up the good work.
