Mike’s activities yesterday must have tired him out, so he spent most of today just dozing. The physio got him up for a while, but he didn’t seem to enjoy it as much and didn’t last long. After any activity, he seems to take a long time to recover and we understand that this need for heaps of sleep will continue for a very long time.
His muscles are getting going more so that he can shift around to get a bit more comfortable. The nurses try to position him on one side or the other to help drain his lungs, but he now always just wriggles over on to his back.
We’ve nearly finished the second Lance Armstrong book. I wonder if Armstrong realizes how much inspiration his story provides for people in difficult situations besides cancer. A friend has given us another cycling book, this time about Armstrong’s record sixth Tour win. Mike seemed to indicate that he wants to hear it next. Meanwhile his big sister Tracy tried him out on some articles in The Economist and reports that he wanted more of them too. Some of us find that a bit hard to believe.
Mike is still on antibiotics, but he seems to be getting more comfortable and better at clearing his throat. We still expect him to be discharged from the hospital on Tuesday.

Dear Wilkinsons,
Thinking of you lots - Greg and Stuart keeping me posted. Sounds like you had the sort of day Greg had on Good Friday, Mike - get your most artful communicators to quiz him about his need to sleep most of the day . . .
Will contact you later in the week to see how it looks for visiting.
Much love, Janne
Dear Wilkinson family,
I was saddened to hear from David Steele of Mike's accident, but have been heartened to read of Mike's progress, and to hear the tone of support and optimism amongst the posted words.
I had been speaking with Mike about US doctoral programmes and/or working in the US. I do hope that one day we can return to those discussions.

A message to you all from the Simpson Family in Havelock North where Mike joined us for the Millennium (Pete our son attended Uni with Mike). Our thoughts have been with you all these many days and it is wonderful to know that Mike is progressing forward. He has an unforgettable zest for life and I'm sure that will be as strong as ever throughout this ordeal. His smile alone makes him a special person. We will continue to follow his progress and send our love and support every day.

Hi Bryce and Lee,
Monique here. Keith and I have been keeping up with reading the blog on a regular basis and always good to read that progress keeps being made and that Mike is moving around more and more. Good to hear that the infection is clearing up too. Thinking of you - hi to Mike even though we have never met him.

Tracy and Rob called this afternoon to check your progress, Mike. They're in Central Otago enjoying good weather, wineries and their friends' company. I had a full house. Janne, friends from Durham Rd., Joyce and Bob Wilson, and Stu and Sue who filled my freezer with fresh baking! Stu did some gardening and we had a restful drink with my next-door neighbours. A great way to spend Easter Sunday. Hugs, Gran.
Sals off down State Highway 1 on her bike, in training for the Latte Women's Triathlon in Aucks soon.Travel safely all you cyclists...and watch out for them you drivers...PLEASE!
Keep up the effort Mike...and good to hear there's an almost smile happening...Arohanui,
Barb Patu
