Hi all, Tracy speaking (I should get this blog sorted out with different identities for each of us in the family)
News
Mike opened his eyes today, when firmly told to do so by Araminta, his physiotherapist, so we're very happy. He also squeezed Mum's hand, when Mum was holding his left, when Dad asked him to squeeze his right hand. (Maybe he will come out of this a left-hander, like his brother and sister and a fair few cousins.) Again, we can't get our hopes up too much, and there is a strong likelihood he'll spend the next few weeks sometimes improving in responsiveness and sometimes being less responsive, but it's a promising sign.
As you can guess, he had his first visit from the physiotherapists today. Araminta is a friend of Kylie's, and so is Anna, who will be his speech therapist, so it's good to know that they're personally involved. They made Mike do his first bicycling exercises today, so all you Ironman competitors had better look out.
Visits
Mum & Dad had a long talk to the charge nurse today, and we've had some more instructions about visitors. Apparently the important thing for the next couple of weeks is to keep Mike from getting tired or agitated. The nurse says that visits should be restricted to members of the immediate family, since he has the longest memories of us. We are to not talk too much, and when we do we should talk about things he already knows. Mike can now get cards - he's already building up a nice collection - and we'll read them to him. But please don't make plans to visit until further notice.
Again, thank you to everyone for all your support over the last week and for all the comments on this blog.

Mr Efficiency - I think I called him that at the last training camp.
Great news about the progress. It seems so easy for us the sqeeze a hand but for Mike it is a big move. A small step of many to come.
It may be difficult for Kellee and I to get in there before we leave on Tuesday morning so can you pass on our best wishes to Mike and his crew. We will be thinking of him on the lonely Ironman road. Will miss seeing his grin.
Rob, Kellee
Great stuff Mike... Gerald, Jane, Jo and Grant are giving Scotty heaps down here at Palmerston North. Scott's leg (rod and all) is the colour of a good Hawkes Bay merlot.Everyone is giving Scotty the same instructions "what to do and not to do" - probably the same that you Mike are receiving from your family and friends in Auckland.
Hugs from the Central region Townsends

Hi Tracy (and Bryce and Lee),
Thanks for putting the blog up. I'm rooting for Mike from Sydney (as are all the Kerrs from around the globe) and have been pestering Mum and Richard for news on a daily basis.
Love to all from Sydney.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. It's good to be able to keep current with Mike's progress.
We are thrilled to hear of his current progress. That he is now breathing for himself, has movement in his limbs is wonderful news. We will continue to monitor this sight for news.

Hey Mike, JB here.
Sorry I haven't been to see you recently, but we all know how important it is for you to spend time with your fmaily and focus on getting better. Looking forward to having a shin dig on the 10th for your birthday. You and me March babies... pisces rock! Hey I told you when you were out for the count, that the nurses rather appreciated you being there, cos all your Ironman buddies created a constant stream of hot visitors! I think they and you made the nurses days!
Can't wait to have you back up to speed, so get well but take it slowly. I'll keep checking to find out when you're up for more visitors. In the meantime, we love you and get well soon so you can promise me the exclusive when you are the New Zealand 2006 Ironman!!
Love to all the family and I'm so glad Mike is coming right. Lots of love and thinking of you all. xxxxxx JB

Hey Mike, cousin James here, keep up the top work. So super to hear that your condition is improving and that you can check out the world - I'm also glad that I'm not the first person for you to view as my hair hasn't been cut once since I left for Oz and it's definately not a pretty sight! Keep on trucking buddy, I'm counting on you to come visit our scummy first year flat on Cuba Street - another sight for sore eyes!
Lee, Bryce, Phil, Trace and family, my thoughts and prayers are with you all. Am very flat-out with returning to Uni and work in Wellys, and can't wait to catch up soon with my experiences of the Australian summer.
Lotsa Love,
Jamesy.
