Hi there Everyone
It was a real progress today. Mike was asked to talk briefly about the write-off of Third World Debt to the morning orientation session at the Rehab Unit. what a request. Little did they know the threat of being subjected to hours of economics. Little did they know all the literature Bryce immediately down-loaded as a contribution. I was amazed. BUT that old economics brain was still there chugging away. Sometimes there was a bit of a wait for the next idea, but the interconnections, the mindset, the familiar old increasing complexity ..still all there. I would have burst into tears, except that people might have thought it was in sorrow at still being stuck with an economist after all that shaking around of the grey matter. Those of you who saw Mike comatose in Auckland Hospital will understand how exciting the progress is, even if it does all lead to more economics.
Other progress. Mike is now having breakfast out in the day room and is able to sit in a chair. This brings him into more social interaction with the other people at Cavitt. He and I think his energy levels are improving. He can last longer in activities and it does not take as long for him to recharge his batteries.
We got a general report today on Mike's Occupational Therapy testing and he had done better than either of us had expected. It looks like most of his abilities are still there, just the time taken to do thing is a bit slow at present. Some of the exercises we think he would have done about the same level pre-accident. One was the sort of skill required to rummage around in a handbag and find things like a mobile phone or a comb. Just as well it's not a blokey activity.

Wish I'd been there! I could have learned a lot!!

Great news, team Wilkinson. What an amazing achievement. It's happening within a fairly tight timeframe. Congratulations to all of you.

Wow! I'm impressed - I can NEVER find my phone in my handbag......nor my keys, swipe card and how come he had to look for a comb when most young people don't know what one is.
Am delighted (I think) about the economics side of things - but thrid world debt write off puts Mike in cahoots with Bob Geldof and Tony Blair. Is that really the sort of company a wholesome young man from Waiwhetu Rd should be keeping?

Mike,
Wonderful news ...but what about leaving some brain cells for things other than economics? What about science for example?
Looking forward to seeing you soon.
Regards,
Dave and Irena
Hey Mike,
great news!! Looks like Mark will still be able to bug you for help with his homework. He has a big research assignment due next semester so I'm sure you can look forward to him harassing you about that.
It's getting closer to our visit to Cavitt. Can't wait to see you again - seems so long since we last hung out. Will be great to see that famous smile again.
Will be in touch soon but until then ....stay cool!
Lots of love,
Zoe and Mark xx
That's great news Mike! I laughed at the picture of Bryce downloading papers for you to read...hope your room has a large filing cabinet. It's so good to read about your progress.
Cushla.
Excellent, Mike! I'll look forward to a chat on age benefits! Nice that Bryce had a little input. Wish I'd been there too ... sounds like social capital to me. Bryce will wish he never informed me on that! Love, Your illiterate (economically!) Gran.
Mike,
You will be shocked to hear i have been over on the dark side this week. Have been on an "Interpreting Financials" short course and i had to bite my tongue at various moments during the course where accounting took a shot at economics... of course being the only marketer in the group i began in a position of weakness and so any defiance was greeted with much scepticism. Really needed your support!! I hope Wellington's loss to the Lions hasnt dented your spirit too much but not to worry - your true home town, the mighty Auckland, will reign supreme on 5 July. Great to see your progress mate.
Mike,
Youre just awesome!! Congrats on the talk and breakfast in the day room!
You've made my night!
Don't worry about the handbag, it will come eventually! Kent has a 'man bag' he'll let you r borrow when were home, so you can practice!! haha
He might even be able to give you some pointers!!
hehe
See you soon!
Amanda!
(only a fews weeks to go!!! Im so excitied!)
Hey Mike
I've been following your blog and your progress is amazing - especially now that the old 'economics' part of the brain is kicking into gear (I wouldn't be too keen to talk on the economics of third world debt even at the best of times!). The competition practice is not the same without you.
Kevin Counsell.
