Hi everyone,
Lee again after quite a silence. Mike reckoned there were no new PBs. I felt it is all one great PB, so here's my interpretation of last week's progress:
Each event was small in itself but each builds into a lot more independence and interaction. I think the major difference is that Mike has so much more energy now. He can last longer in activity and it doesn't seem to take so long to rebuild his energy. That enables him to work at things a bit longer. Also, as he does manage a new challenge, it seems to build his confidence that he can cope with the next one.
One bit of progress was that Mike got a new wheelchair - one that he can wheel himself and that is easier for us to manage too. He doesn't have enough energy to wheel very far, but it is a great feeling of independence. With it, the walking frame and the trolley he can organise his day to suit himself without having to wait for anyone else.
Now that Mike is up for longer, he needs more clothes so Bryce and I wheeled him into Lambton Quay. We bought some more clothes and even met some friends of Mike's in the shop. Of course Bryce so loves shopping it was a real thrill for him!
Yesterday Mike and I wheeled our way into the World Press Photo exhibition. It was very crowded but we discovered that everyone makes way for us to be able to see the photos. The only time I've parted the crowds before was when I was with a nun friend who wears the full nun regalia. We'd recommend the exhibition,if it comes your way - the photos I mean, not the nuns.
All the domestic activity has a good effect on Mike's skills. Its like second time around of training up your kids! I've been putting him to work washing dishes and peeling vegetables. Tracy started a new job last week. She and Andrew moved out of our apartment and into a place within walking distance. Phil, Bryce and I were helping them move into their flat and Mike got caught up in that too. It all requires a lot of work from Mike, to prop himself up against things, manoeuvre around furniture, and to develop small scale movements such as usng a vegetable peeler.
Plus of course last weekend required the crucial cultural skills connected with watching the All Black Lions Test. Mike lasted the whole game with just a half time rest.
Plus Bryce has even got Mike working on that blasted addictive Sudoku maths puzzle stuff.
On a smaller scale, Mike can now eat unsupervised, so we're expecting further weight gains. He can also shower when he wants to. Sounds trivial but it means he doesn't need to wait until the nurses are free to keep an eye on him. His swimming is progressing. Mostly the hydrotherapy focuses on trunk flexibility and walking action, but in his short attempts at freestyle, his legs are sinking less. Plus on Sunday night he discovered that he can still do press ups! He did two easily. I had a go and struggled with one. The walking is going okay and Mike is now walking with one crutch with someone to help. The physio expects that in another three weeks he will be able to walk entirely on his own. Mike's non-physical project this week is to carry out a bit of work/economics analysis and he is really looking forward to getting into that.
Cavit are now talking about Mike coming home to live within the next couple of months, so things are falling into place. Now Tracy and Andrew have moved out we will be able to set up the spare bedroom for Mike to be there for a while. I presume he will continue to go out to Cavit for therapy some days and gradually start to integrate into ordinary life.
You can see that Mike's life each day makes further progress towards normal living. The amazing thing is how normal it is becoming when we were facing disaster such a short time ago.
Back to Mike again next time.

Lee,
Thank you so much for your update! We were begining to get worried!
Mike,
You need to stop being so modest. There were about a million PBs in your Mums blog. Please don't leave us hanging for so long next time!!
Everyday you are making and breaking PBs and we so love to hear about them! Wickid to hear about your new wheelchair that you can cruze around it. And the biggest achievement would have to be watching all of the ABs game! Oh to have any rugby over here!!
Keep it up! See you really soon! Only a few weeks to go!!
Lots of Love,
Amanda and Kent

What a great update!
Mike, you set yourself the highest of standards - how on earth could you have thought that there were no PB's in that rundown???
The independence you are gaining sounds excellent and you must be loving it. No doubt you are hanging out for the economics analysis this week and as for Soduku - I must try it...seems it has taken the world by storm...!

Gidday Mike
Well, aren't we quite the man about town. And I see you are planning to abandon the Hutt Valley and all of it's charms for some fancy central city apartment. For shame, for shame young man. Stick with your roots, that's what I say. Then again, I can't talk - the Haines' having escaped to the ever-so-borgeouis environs of Days Bay. We get the ferry so we don't even need to drive past Lower Hutt. Which brings me to the point of this rambling contribution. I'm coming home for a week on Saturday will be in Wellington until Monday July 11th. I'd love to come out and see you, and would even stoop to going down the Hutt for a crap coffee on one of these so-called "couches" you've been hallucinating into existence. Perhaps you could get your people to talk to my people and we could set something up. Oh and tell your Mum, not to worry too much. I can't even do one press up properly.
Cheers mate, hope to see you soon.

Lee - a wonderful update thank you! Congratulations Mike. The steady progress is fantastic!(And I bet you never thought you'd see the day when you were compared to a nun in full regalia!!??)
Cheers!

Hi Mike, Lee & Bryce
I follow your every move and milestone with avid interest. The trouble is I always end up with a lump in my throat and a tear in my eye!!! You are ALL doing so fantastically well and you can all be very proud of the wonderful progess you have made these last few months. Congratulations and I just love your blogs so keep them coming. Mike you're an inspiration! Lots of love and best wishes, Anne Reid xxoo
I'm worried about Lee being up to do a posting at 1.36am!!Earlier on I was amused by the number who could post during work hours! You economists should try primary teaching for a day...
We love to hear from you Mike.
Keep it going.
The Patus in Northland (& Bex in london & Sally in Sudan.)
Good work Mike, it sounds like you're progressing in leaps and bounds.
The last time I remember you in a wheel chair was at the Waiheke Island ferry terminal after Dave Aitken's going-away party. Lynch was pushing you around and some of the locals got a bit upset. This time, it sounds like you're not getting as much grief - maybe you're driving a bit slower.
I've booked flights to Wellington for the weekend of 16 July so book me in for a visit (or two or three)
See you later
Dave
Mike, Lee + co,
Wow ..incredible progress. Great to hear that you are dusting off your analytical skills Mike. Here is a thought for you. The time series of your PBs must be showing exponential growth since February. Perhaps you can figure out an analytical expression that describes this?
Wonderful work on your part and your family. Looking forward to seeing you soon.
Love and regards,
Dave and Irena
PS We see Suzanne off on her OE this weekend. She will spend a couple of weeks in China and then crash at Greg's flat in London. I wonder how that will work out?!
Hey Mike, Lee, Bryce, Phil, Tracey & Andrew
Just tuned in after a long absence from checking Blogs. It must be such a relief for you Mike to have a change of scene. At least Welly provides an ever-changing city and seascape which you can view from lofty heights. I think Palmy would prove less visually stimulating!
Though, last night the Lions came to town and it was an arse kicking for Manawatu 100 something to 6 I think! But the city was alive and buzzing like I've never seen it before - really made it feel quite cosmopolitan. It also gave the car boy racers more than the averrage obstacle to circle around countless times in the Square.Cos, that's what you do here for kicks!
Off to Dave Dobbyn concert in Feilding tonight. Looking forward to that mainly becase we went to StarWars on Monday and the baby proved it's Jedi worthiness - never felt it kick so much, neither had Grant so he didn't concentrate on the movie much and had a proud father 2B glow on - must have been the surround sound and action scenes - was good movie tho. Wish there was another one.
Katie, Scotty and I are all converging on the Hawke's Bay on the weekend of July 23rd for a ugly blisters birthday celebration. We left it a bit later because of Scotty's work and so his leg is fully strong enough to drive down.
We'll be down in the next few months to Welly, so we will visit, but if you feel so inclined for a day trip Mike - you're welcome to Palmy anytime - you'll be impressed to see that the wedding mark left on the grass still shows. I'm think of planting it with daffodils for spring and eternal rememberance, that I am after all a lucky, lucky lady.
Take care and go hard on real esspresso coffee and familial love.
PS. Lee - thankyou so much for the love rug - I will send you a clucky aunty photo of nude baby on blanket when it arrives - I call it the cookie monster fur - talked to Tracey last night, and I'm keen on the idea of you both being our art buyers.
Luv Jo, Grant, Boots and Baby Jedi
This progress sounds like a runaway to me !!!Actually caught the live game in Abu Dhabi at the golf and equestrian center .The rumour went round that they were showing it live so I hurriedly put my black duds on .I thought Id be surrounded by the barmy army but there were lots of kiwis there flags aflying .We all said how "normal" we felt although just sitting and watching and having a few beers but.we all decided we didnt miss the weather spying the sleet and seeing Tana shivering at the end .Great result though The brits at the back were well quiet..
The construction workers here have just been given a 4 hour break in the middle of the day in the months of July and August.I suppose that means noise into the late hours of the night .Shaikh Khalifa made the edict today He must be getting humanitarian
Keep up the house work good training for future susi
Mike
You are an inspiration to us all. Keep charging and don't ever forget your dreams.
Best wishes

Hey All,
Having an extended lunch break here catching up on the last few entries on the site!
How exciting about going home Mike - and possibly for good in as soon as 2 months!
I didn't watch the rugby last weekend....I was woken up for the match and apparently told my friend that sleep was more of a priority (but maybe not using those exact words).
Its funny being over here having the Lions play the All Blacks...everyone at work talks to me about the games...and i don't even like rugby!
I have Francie and Aurelia coming to London this weekend - it will be interesting to see how busy everything gets with the big G8 concert on in Hyde Park.
Still thinking of you...
Take care,
Kylie

I certainly am a paid up member of the Wilkinson Clan Admiration Society.
Well done team.
Hi Mike,
Good to hear that you are up and about. It must have been a glad change to spend a night in Thorndon. Gauging by the progress you've made to date you'll be trading the Coke's for Tui's at the local pub in no time.
Keep up the work on the sudoku. Will have to come and visit again soon.
Cheers
Azza

Thanks Lee.
Mike, there's hundreds of us out here, who follow your progress with awe and were a little worried when all went quiet.
Keep the progress reports coming no matter how small.
We're all thrilled at each little step!

Hi Mike, Bryce and Lee,
Just read the blog posted on June 27th..WOW! AMAZING! This fantastic progress is such a joy to read about. Sounds like you are putting out in so many ways Mike; I mean talking economics, swimming, managing domestic chores etc. Way to go. Great to hear. I'm glad you are able to be at home a bit now too. That must be a wonderful change for you.
Thinking of you on Vancouver Island, Canada.
Monique and Keith
Colum and I have also become addicted to Sudoku, though neither of us has yet completed a diabolical one - I don't intend to try! Go to it, Mike. Beat your dad and your mum at it - I gather that in your mother's case that won't be difficult!
Wonderful to hear of all the great progress
Hi Mike,
Been catching up with your news. You are obviously making enormous progress and great to hear that you are steadily gaining more stamina (and weight) as time goes on. You must really be enjoying the chance to spend time at home with Lee and Bryce. See that you are enjoying sudoku too - its certainly very addictive!!
Best wishes
John C
