Back to my element

Hi guys,

Friday (3rd June) ended two difficult yet successful days of Physiotherapy. On both days my Physio, Sue, was pleased with how things went.

On Thursday, I successfully negotiated some stairs. Going down stairs can ordinarily make recovering patients dizzy. They made my Dad dizzy during his recovery after he decided to throw himself off a bridge during a mountain biking trip when I was 13 resulting in a broken pelvis amongst other injuries. Fortunately, there was no dizziness for me and I managed to get 16 in before I tired.

On Friday, much to Haydn's (my former swimming coach) presumed pleasure I had my first swim. The swim can make patients throw up, but that wasn't an issue for me. It was good to be in the water again. After a number of seasons of water polo in secondary school and swimming training prior to my decision to get into triathlon (plus the fact my brother and I were known as water babies growing up) made swimming easily my best triathlon discipline. The only problem this time was that due to a lack of trunk strength my bottom half wouldn't float like it used to so I had trouble kicking when I tried a few strokes. Still the tiredness didn't kick in as much as it could have and the walking (the real reason we came swimming) went well.

All in all, it was a rewarding couple of days.

Kind regards,
Mike

P.S. David Haines, I don't mean to talk up the Hutt but you owe me a flat white [check what he promised]. Janus café has two couches.

Two couches? I don't believe it. I think we need to have this checked by an independent assessor. If what you say is true, then the Hutt City has finally made it into the 21st century. And only 5 years too late. Not bad, not bad.

Not that I don't trust you, but I've done some research on the matter. According to EntertainmentNZ.com, the Hutt boasts two "Janus Bakkerij" cafés, one at 700 High St and another at the Dowse. Doesn't say anything about a couch though. I've sent my spies down from Days Bay to conduct further investigations. Did you know, apparently Lower Hutt has a thriving café scene that "varies between bohemian and modern innovative". Who would have thought?

In other news, it's snowing down here and too frickin' freezing to do anything but sit in bed, read history articles and tap away at my Masters. I envy you, with your active lifestyle - what with the swimming and the walking up and down stairs. You've making me feel lazy. Hey, maybe the couches are few and far between, but at least they have central heating in the Hutt Valley. I swear they've never heard of it in Dunedin.

OK then, I give up. You can have your flaming coffee when I'm next up. We could even sit on the couch. Or even two couches, one each. Just as long as the café is bohemian and not "modern innovative", whatever that might mean. It sounds more like a new genre of dance music than a place where you go to get a flat white.

Oh yeah, and to set the record straight, I don't think your Dad quite threw himself off a bridge on his bicycle. As I recall, he rode brusquely past my Mum without indicating he was overtaking her, and she shoved him off in anger at his rudeness. Served him right, really. Of course, I could be mistaken...

Anyway, have a great week and be sure to keep up your intensive research into the innumerable cafés and couches of the Hutt Valley. Or, more probably, infinite tearooms with frilly tablecloths, laced curtains and railway mugs. Make sure you wear your cardy. I'll have an egg sandwich and a lamington please.

cheers,
Dave

Hey Happy,

Great to hear of your continued stellar progress, and also your defence of the Hutt (Lower that is...) that we know and love.

Molly and I have scored some 2 for 1 airfares to NZ for September so I'm really looking forward to coming to see you then. We might even some real cold weather - people are so soft in Sydney.

Take it easy mate,
Mike.

Hey mate, great to read your progress is going so well! Before you know it you'll be back to a brisk 4km in the pool :-)

I'm now in Sydney, having accepted a job with Westpac. Will be back and forth a bit, so will make an effort to pop in a for a visit.

cheers

Hey Mike,

Good to hear it from the horse's mouth. You must be loving getting back in the pool. I could do with some swim coaching from you actually. I've tried to get back into the pool recently, found a pool in a little hick town out in the sticks close to where i work. Unfortunately i make drowning look like an artform. Mind you, the old ladies at the pool love me there, maybe they think they'll have a chance of mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. I don't know how they manage to slowly float up and down the pool, it's a skill i'd love to learn.

Anyway mate, take care, hope the physio continues to go well. Keep up the good work!

Cheers
Raj

Hi Mike,

Great to hear you are back in the pool.

There seems to be a lack of pools in London...so i can't say the same for me....back not for a lack of trying.

I know that before I left N.Z, Carmel and the Roskill masters swimmers where all asking after you - so i am sure that they too will be pleased to know that you are back into it again!

I'm making a list of 'Mike's friends I'd love to meet' and David Haines goes right to the top! Grace, style, wit ... this guy has the lot! Just one thing - his Mum wouldn't push ANYONE off a bridge, much less Bryce! Enjoy your achievements my dear, Hugs, Gran.

Hey Mike,

Good to see your back in the water swimming! You have now done more work in the pool since ironman than i have. Keep it going.
