9th June: Inching towards independence

Hi. Lee here again. Bryce and Andrew are tacking their way ever closer to setting Mike up with a computer and then there will be no holding him back. At the moment, Mike is off line and in the meantime there's just me.

Mike has shifted rooms, in with two other guys. This means that there's someone sicker than him, which I guess is progress. For those of you who visit, he's now in a room on the other side of the unit, down the end nearest Pilmuir Street. He's decided to sack me as his personal secretary and take over running his social life. Which is great.

Mike's new room is closer to the toilet, so he is able to walk there with a walking frame and just a nurse to watch his walking. And this morning he ate his breakfast sitting up on the side of his bed, which makes eating a lot easier. Each of these developments seem small but involve a lot of work on muscle control and strength.

The latest O2Max magazine has an inspirational article in it about a young woman who was badly hurt in a road accident and has trained her way back into being one of NZ's top surf lifesavers. This was great reading for MIke, especially when he realised she'd had a brain injury as well as extensive other injuries. I guess we all are inspired by such stories but we just never think that life will make sucha demand on someone close to us. The day in day out requiremnent for determination, patience and courage is very difficult to communicate.

On that profound note,good night!

Lee

Hello Mike and Family
We have been catching up with your latest progress Mike, and its good to know that it is positive.
A lovely big frost here in Havelock North this morning and Mark had to de-ice the car as we only have room for one in the garage. We had the benefit of a beaut day afterwards.
We have acquired a walking partner (Chloe a Lab dog)whose owner cannot walk her so we have been on the Te Mata Peak trails which not only benefits the dog but us as well.

Regards to all
Gail and Mark

Hey Mike

Sounsd like you're continuing your excellent progress.

Anna and I spent the long weekend in Hawkes Bay which was great and her work ball is this weekend. The new flat's going well but we seem to do more cleaning in a week than we did in two years!

Keep up these profound statements Lee and Bryce. We read your site everyday despite having not commented for a while.
Gave a yell of approval at Inglewood yesterday for you. It was SO beautiful with the Mountain so clear. We joined the Barmy Army in New Plymouth streets after THE GAME and the city was a great host. So we felt very proud for all the Brown Family!!!!
Go Mike Go and enjoy your new room and outings.
You are all always on our minds
Cheers Kay and Hallam

I hear that you're now 'computerised' again... danger...danger! The world is there to be communicated with? We're coming down on Wed/Thurs to watch Wellington trash the Lions. So we'll tell you all about it on Thurs am.
We've just had Katie's Outrigging crew to stay for the weekend... about 12 of them. It was a great weekend & I watched them paddle in perfect HB weather... 16 km along the Napier foreshore. Their energy & skills are impressive!
Much love,
Jane & Gerald

Hey Mike, now you've got company you'll be talking the socks off them in no time - as James says, one of things he misses is your incessant talking all day :o)
Good to hear all the positive things happening with you and hope we'll be out for a visit again soon.

Hi Mike

I thought of you last night as there was an interview on Radio Sport with Doherty & his coach and they were talking about stress/recovery issues (surprise). In case you weren't aware of it, this is a regular program: "High Performance Hour" on Radio Sport (1503am), Sunday 7-8pm, hosted by Cameron Harper and Jon Ackland.
Cheers

Hi Mike and Family,

It's Craig here, Lesley's son.

I've got a blog of my own and just showed mum how you can "sign" your comments. She mentioned about how people were using anonymous on this blog.

If you want, people can click "Other" in the "Leave your Comment" window and put a display name in so that the post appears under an author. It doesn't keep track of you or anything, it is simply a formatting feature.

Can be tidier than reading a header of "anonymous said..." and then having to find a name somewhere in the comment.

Me and mum have been following the blog since the start, really great to hear how you are coming along.

All the best,
Craig

P.S: I've started to get all geeky with my blog so if you want me to help you add or change anything it would be no prob (Craig is to geeky features as Bryce is to Economics ;-)

Hi Mike and family
Great news that you are 'on the move' in so many ways.
Excellent weather for biking over here, so cool in the mornings and evenings. Went bush last weekend and amongst other sights spent 45mins watching heli mustering - 2 helicopters dancing in the air and all the dust created by 1500 cattle! A great modern sight for the Kimberley.Half the Aussie army is out on a community building an airstrip as an exercise an amazing amount of equipment.
Hope you enjoying some wonderful wellington winter days
Cheers Liz
