Mike is sleeping lots now. When he is awake he is talking lots. His voice is deep and getting clearer, although it is still not easy to follow. He is consistently concerned about others and wanting to get news of how friends and family are faring. Yesterday, he wanted to know everything Ben had told us about his accident. Then he wanted to know if Ben was running the Ironman in 2006. So we 'text' (as our kids say) Ben, who affirmed that he was, perhaps with a deep breath. The nurse then told Mike to think again. She said, not unkindly, that the last bloke who was in Cavit with Mike's degree of injury was there for 18 months. Mike looked a bit shocked. So was I, truth to tell. The nurse added that while Cavit would do everything it could to help Mike recover, Cavit could not effect a recovery, that had to come from Mike. I think that was what Mike wanted to hear. As Ben 'text' back, the 18 months benchmark is one target Mike will be keen to blow away. Mike was sleepier today, and perhaps a bit less lucid with it. For example, he asked that I take care of the hotel bill for now. A nurse put his mind at rest by explaining that this was a hospital. (We did not need to explain that it was not a US hospital, or that he was insured.) It is good to see him more relaxed -- indicating that the nurses were right about his being over-stimulated earlier in the week .

Dear Mike
Mary, John, Liz and Matt here. We've just spent the past five days travelling around the more remote volcanic areas of southern Kyushu. We seem to have spent a lot of time rolling out of one olsen and into the next. We are now in Kagoshima and were delighted today to finally find an internet cafe and access your blog site. Great to read of your excellent progress over the past week. Keep it up! Good to hear our postcards are rolling in - posted #28 to you today! Thinking of you as we head for Kyoto tomorrow by one of those amazing bullet trains.
Love to you all.
Mary
Hi everyone,
It's good to be able to follow Mike's progress and we're thrilled with how well he's doing.

Hi Mike,
Its been great being able to follow your progress over the last few weeks. You will be pleased to know that I met up with Lynch at Miles' birthday drinks last weekend and that he is enjoying his first weeks in London. He met my flatmates while out for drinks in wimbledon and made his debut in our golf society last sunday. Was loads of fun, especially seeing him in a playoff for the wooden spoon after a couple of pints! All else is good here, had a super trip to South Africa and am now struggling through work looking forward to a boys weekend golfing in Ireland in a couple of weeks. Keep up the great progress of the last few days and know that everyone over here is thinking of you.

Hey Mike
I check your site first thing every morning. Actually, to be honest, I check the days electricity prices first for my electricity market project. I'm into the writing stage now. Laura and I are moving into a two bedroom place, all going well, so when you finally get around to coming to the States I hope you can stop by Pasadena.
Cheers, David (Young)
With Mike's determination and good progress, we're sure he'll beat the 18-month stay. What a great guy and what a wonderful family. We love you all and watch your progress daily. Keep up the good work!
Love, Cynthia and Alan Ettlin

Hi guys, you have been given a benchmark.
Mike, with your fantastic support crew you can do anything.
Go the Wilkinson's a team effort.

Interesting about over-stimulation demanding relaxation Mike. Happens with my age group too! I've noticed how lonely souls here talk faster and more eagerly in a group situation until suddenly they can't remember the words they want. Lack of practice, I guess, as well as pleasure at having someone to talk to. That's not your problem! Yours ever, Gran.
It looks like we're back to the race of the tortoise and the hare. The hare might have been the fastest but in the end the consistancy of the tortoises speed won in the end. We will all look forward to you proving this right Mike and will hang in there with you.

Great to hear about your progress Mike. It must feel good to be able to speak at last. Sounds like you are getting the rest you need and the right amount of stimulation for now. Way to go....you're doing GREAT!
