12th April: One step forward, one backwards

Yesterday we were so pleased that Mike had his trachy out. Onward and upward we thought, but really it's all such a fragile process. Last night Mike was very restless and agitated and the nurses think this was caused by fatigue resulting from the trachy removal. (Four injections in your neck aren't exactly nice!) Today as a result he was very tired and drawn. Mike was very pleased to start on food through his mouth. They started very carefully using pureed food, but this afternoon his temperature went up, so there was a possibility that he was aspirating some of the food risking another chest infection.

So it is just not even progress. However, Mike in good Ironman style is collecting PBs. One was that he talked to us via Tracy's cell phone - it's a sign of modern life for that to seem such a major step forward! The other PB was that he fed himself the pureed fruit. This would seem a tiny step, but the small motor skills involved are difficult. Yesterday he had a go at wiping his face with a flannel and found that required a huge input of energy and co-ordination.

Here's hoping he's settled down by tomorrow.

Hi Mike.
We have been following your progress closely. Keep up the good work, you will need those improved motor skills for that long awaited Steak followed by a nice cold beer.
Lots of Love, Simon(Kylies uncle) Raewyn and the kids.

Disappointing for Mike to have a temperature but removal of the "t" must be a tricky procedure to cope with. It has seemed like 100 steps forward lately so here's hoping that this wobbly bit won't last long.

OK, next challenge, keeping Mike away from the cellphone. Have cellphone can communicate. The joys of modern life.
Well done Mike.
Support team you are awesome.

PBs are what it's all about - noone can ask anymore and you are on the road to clocking many more. Sounds like the thumb will be put to the test next for txt messaging!! It's great to keep reading of your successes Mike.

Cheers

Happy!
Get into the puree! Bananas mashed up with icecream is so good, maybe not that healthy at the moment, but really yummy!

Keep up the brilliant progress! Sometimes it takes one backwards to make two forward.
But..... 'Everyday in every way, you are getting better and better!'
Thinking of you lots!
You're my inspiration for my marathon on Sunday! I might be on NHK chanel 6! (if you'e in Japan!!)
Next time I do one, you'll be running it next to me, I can't wait!
Keep up the PB's!

Hey Mike, glad to hear you are already planning the next Ironman, ill have to make sure I'm in the country to see that one.

I hear you are missing some of your favourite vices well I'm in Atlanta, Georgia right now visiting a friend of mine and this city is the home of Coca-Cola. You can go to the World of Coke museum and drink all the coke you want while you are there.

So a trip to plan for after the Ironman campaign perhaps?
