Yesterday’s posting

Our apologies for missing the blog last night. We all went in different directions and didn’t think about it till this morning. A good day for Mike yesterday. He is cleared to go back to Cavit today, so the next stage of rehab can start. The time in the medical ward hasn’t been a standstill in progress. He’s moving lots more and trying to turn over on to his front – a bit difficult with various tubes still in, but a good idea. He is a getting a little more pro-active in the communication process – giving his Mum a kiss goodbye etc.

The nurses on the medical ward have been great. They are very caring and were always looking out for Mike’s wider comfort and communication needs.

The hospital speech language therapist came by and created him a requests chart. Now as long as you hold the chart near his hand he can point to: ‘Please be quiet’ ‘I’d like some music’ etc. We forgot to add in “Please read me more economics’! On second thoughts, with two other economists in the family it perhaps should be ‘Please, no more economics’.

Once Mike has settled back into Cavit and we have an in idea of the daily routine, we will talk to the Cavit staff about increasing his number of visitors. So if you are planning to visit, just phone us to check.

Fab news that Mike is communicating - both for him and for you guys - now Tracy will really find out if he was fascinated by that Economist article on black v white education.
Positive thoughts to you all as we head out today for Miyajima - will visit the famous floating shrine and remember you there.
Love, Mary, John, Liz and Matt

Jan Gundersen here (Kate's Mum) In my earlier email I said we hadn't met Mike but would very much like to one day - Bryan thought I had really lost the plot when I told him that I had said we hadn't met Mike - it transpires he has met both Mike and Bryce!!! A few people had commented to Bryan "was that you on the website etc etc." and he didn't know what they were talking about which he said made him look just a tad stupid. So that solves that little mystery!!

Getting back to a much more important issue, it is really great to read about Mike's progress on this blog website - I read it every day and it's all positive - so well done. I really hope to meet you all one day soon. Keep the good work up, it can't be easy and I really feel for you but onwards & upwards.

Kind Regards.

Jan Gundersen

Great stuff Mike,
all the Jaffas are still rooting for you so keep up the hard work! Good to hear you are keeping your parents and the hospital staff on their toes. Look forward to hearing of more positive progress.
Thinking of you all,
Zo and Mark.
P.S Mike, went for a ride today in my new orca cycle pants and thought of you out there on your long training rides - man you tri geeks must enjoy a hard ride because I definately missed the comfort of a full chamois! Don't know how you did it. Must mean I'm a bit rusty!! - Zo
