April 22nd: Mike rejoins the cafe society

A really great milestone today. I got to wheel Mike in his wheelchair down to the Zoom Cafe in the Hutt Hospital and we bought a great coffee. A superb feeling. On the way we met one of the physios from the medical ward who was amazed to see us out and about. It wasn't till later that I realised that the Post Traumatic Amnesia meant that Mike couldn't remember any of the time in the medical ward, or any of the people - physios or otherwise. He had been awake, laughing, semi-communicating etc, but couldn't actually remember any of it.

Now Mike can eat, he is starting to put on weight and is now back up in the 40kg class having added nearly two kilos. Still quite a way to go.

That is SO impressive. Next thing you know he'll be sunbathing on the roof!

Great photo, Mike, of another milestone on the long journey back.
That coffee must have tasted soooo good. Your tastebuds must be appreciating the wider range of food that you are starting to eat.
What a unique opportunity lies ahead - the chance to eat and eat until you get back up to your usual weight. Most of us are trying to avoid putting on weight or working hard to take it off.
Your amazing mother has just organised a vehicle for me (Lindsay)to borrrow for a couple of days while I am up in Wellington and someone to pick me up at the airport. Isn't she thoughtful?
I'm looking forward to for some first hand accounts on your continuing recovery - it is inspiring stuff.

What a great photo. Helen and I have both enjoyed 'bumping' into Lee at Zoom and are now looking forward to seeing Mike there as well!
I'm on A/L for a week, but will be keeping up to date daily from Whangarei.

Mike - you are looking so much more yourself! Mum and I have just checked out the photo! Its great. Keep up the eating - you still need some fattening up - I imagine that a few bananas and that very much anticipated Coke will help!
Thinking of you - looking forward to visiting when you are up to it.

HI Mike,

I'm so impressed!! I haven't been able to log onto you website for a while now as there's been no internet access but your progress in amazing.

I'm in Laos and have written you a letter- just need to find somewhere to post it now!

Was run over by a motorbike this morning (literally) so am having a quiet day while the others climb steps to temples.

Off to find a post shop now.

Keep up your amazing progress.

Lou :-)

PS Great photo- I'm jealous of your coffee.

Hi Mike
Lovely to see you enjoying a real coffee at the Cafe (it has got to beat that Hospital instant coffee).
Still thinking of you each day.
Have a nice time with Kim and Paul there.
Hello to your Family too.
