18th April:Where are we at now Mike's out of PTA

Today Mike is officially out of Post Traumatic Amnesia. While this is good news, this PTA stage has taken a long time (over 7 weeks). The length fits the pattern of a serious brain injury and means that Mike is very unlikely to make a 100% recovery. On the other hand, his progress so far has been considerably better expected, so there is a lot of reason to think that he will do far better than the average.

This all means that there is a really long way to go - we don't know how long, or where the journey is leading us. Because Mike has been so fragile, he has not been able to manage any active rehab, but this can start now. Such are his fatigue levels, that rehab will start with 5 minutes in the morning and 5 minutes in the afternoon and initially even that small amount will exhaust him.

Still, onward and upward. Mike had a PBB today - Personal Banana Best. His banana eating speed has increased! Those of you who know Mike's banana eating prowess will be relieved by his progress in this area.

Regards

Lee

Hi Lee
nice to know bananas are featuring in Mikes march back to health. I caught up with Jane & Gerald the other day, thought I may have caught Yvonne there as well but didn't, not to worry, it was good to see J.&G.
Love to you all
Ben and Anne.

Dear Mike, Lee, Bryce, Tracy, Phil, Andrew,
Thanks for this realistic update. I'd so like to believe in the 'complete recovery' scenario - I'm sure there are others out there nodding . . .and yet, given where you've come back from, Mike, its just neat to know and hear about your thinking and talking, the progress you're making, and to look forward to enjoying your company however that can be. We're with you!
love Janne

Another milestone Mike. Let the real journey begin. Ahead are different paths that you would never have dreamed of. Challenges that will make the iron man look tame. Go for it Mike and your support team.

Hi Lee & family
No words of wisdom today, Mike functioning at 80% is better than a lot of us at 100%. New directions will open up as time goes by and the happiness you have always wanted for Mike will be there but on a different path.
Are there people caring for the carers - family?
Much love Liz

Hey mate, great to hear your back reading, I'm sure you've got a stack of tri & economist mag's to catch up on! Keep up the good work especially with regards to the bananans (do they have pockets in the back of your hospital gowns to store?).

p.s. slowly winning over dave b and others to multisport - almost got him into a kayak for the Rangatoto Challenge last saturday (Kayak to Rangatoto, run round it and kayak back). We'll have him and others lining up at the start line yet!

Great to hear the news of Mike's eating etc Any improvement, however small is a step in the right direction.Hundreds of us out here are willing Mike to a complete recovery, and know by other patients experiences, it is a very slow progress.
Hugs to Lee and Bryce.

Hi, Lee,
Great to hear that Mike's making such amazing progress!!
I'll be at the hospital on Thursday afternoon on some routine appointments - one at 1.30, the other at 2.30. I'll keep a good eye on the coffee place - it would be really good to connect with you again!
This web site is such a good idea!!
Cheers!
